Crytek: "Next-generation of home consoles will be the last"
Cevat Yerli thinks mobile and browser gaming will dominate the market
Crytek's CEO Cevat Yerli has cast doubt on the future of hardcore console gaming in a recent interview.
"The console will displace the PC, you hear it again and again. On the contrary, I suspect that the next-generation of home consoles will be the last one," Yerli told German site Golem, which was translated by VG247.
"Of course there are still hardcore gamers who sit for an hour to install and then play for eight hours. But these consumers are becoming the minority. Today's gamers buy a game for 99 cents, download it and play it for 15 to 20 minutes per day over a period of two months - and then they move on."
He also revealed that while CryEngine licensees were creating games for Wii U, Crytek was not planning any in-house development. He also reiterated the company's line on PlayStation handheld the Vita.
"The Playstation Vita is currently too uncertain for us as a platform. Technically, I find the Vita very appealing, and have fun with it - no question. From a business perspective it is a bit too late."
He seemed unsure about cloud gaming as a platform for hardcore gaming, citing issues with internet speeds, compression and latency.
Crytek recently released its first mobile title Fibble.

"But these consumers are becoming the minority."
In the grand scheme of things, yes that's true. However, they are not shrinking in numbers. If there were enough core consumers to support the games of yesterday and today with those numbers then there are enough to justify new "core" games being made on consoles and PC.
"Today's gamers buy a game for 99 cents, download it and play it for 15 to 20 minutes per day over a period of two months - and then they move on."
Well, not really true unless you're looking at one specific segment of the market... which would be really narrow-minded and could cause mistakes/mishaps when assessing business decisions/directions. Not to mention gross generalisations like that above... Plus, those gamers always existed, they are not "today's" gamers any more than gamers 10 years ago were the only kind. There isn't some sort of evolution of "gamer" going on. They existed 20 years ago when the pre-packaged solitare game in Windows was the most widely played computer game on the planet and they still exist today - it's just that the market is now catering to their tastes.
