Android update leaves Sony's PlayStation phone behind

Sony will not make the latest Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" software update available to users of its Xperia Play smartphone.

Sony made its intentions clear on its official Sony Xperia blog.

"In regards to Xperia Play, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich - therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia Play."

It said the decision was based on feedback from developers and game content providers. The will be available for all other 2011 Xperia phones, including the Xperia arc, Xperia pro and Xperia ray. The Android 4.0 update adds new features like face unlock, voice search and better browsing.

The beta is pretty bad but I'm seeing signs that it's a bug in the kernel<->Android interaction causing the horrible lag problems, that it's not the limited hardware at fault. Seems to misconfigure the CPU governor, reset that manually to 'interactive' after every boot and the phone springs back into life and I assume it would also stop the battery drain some have complained about. It also stops my Play spontaneously rebooting at random.

The disappointment is Sony giving up so easily. They need to hand over the source for the community to fix. It also means Gameloft have no incentive to fix the games that won't even start up on ICS beta. Every other game I've tried just works.

This is really unfortunate. I was looking fwd into this update for my Play. I haven't tried the Beta because I really don't fancy dabbling with excessively unstable software on a mobile phone, but I was hopeful that they would get it working fine.

Very disappointed, Sony, I must say.
