Indies launch Because We May price cut campaign

Ron Carmel initiative highlights market power of independents with discounted games

New campaign Because We May has launched, and aims to highlight the importance of controlling your own pricing in the indie development market. And it's doing it with heavy discounts on big indie titles.

"We believe that developers should have the freedom to price their games how they like, without interference from the online stores that sell the games," said the official site, which features over 50 games.

"Why? Because it allows us to promote our games more freely, as we are doing here! We rely on the ability to promote our games for our livelihood and control over pricing is an important tool for this purpose."

The price-cutting initiative was the brain child of 2D Boy's Ron Carmel, and includes big name indie titles like Eets, Darwinia and Braid on a number of digital distribution platforms from Steam to iOS. It's scheduled to end on June 1.

Most games feature considerable price cuts, but Super Office Stress has actually raised its price from $3 to $99.99. "Why so high? Because we may!"

Developers can register for the scheme here.
