Bigpoint to distribute new Square Enix browser title Gameglobe

User-created content at heart of Hapti.co developed browser game

Square Enix has turned to Bigpoint to publish and distribute its new browser title, Gameglobe.

In development at Square's Danish studio Hapti.co, Gameglobe is an action adventure game with tools for players to create their own content. According to Phil Rogers, CEO of Square Enix Europe, the game is a step towards connecting with players who are already sharing and building their own worlds.

"Everyone in games today has to be looking at frankly what can only be described as a proliferation of formats," he said. "Of course overall this is driving tremendous growth supported by fundamental shifts in terms of how consumers want to play games.

"We saw for a whole bunch of people, building and sharing were things they really loved doing. So, if there's a decision we took, it was to design around these motivations and the format, if you like, just fell out from here."

Neither company would be drawn on what incentives, financial or otherwise, players will be given for creating content, but according to Bigpoint's executive producer Jan-Michel Saaksmeier, the technology will allow users advanced levels of creation.

"The HD graphics are on-par with the current crop of consoles and the community focus of the platform makes perfect use of the social nature of the web. It feels like what's being created is the gaming equivalent to YouTube," he told GamesIndustry International.

Gameglobe is due to go into closed beta this month and will be officially unveiled at E3 in June.
