Cliff Bleszinski also says he wants the consoles always-connected to the Internet

Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski recently said at PAX East that he wants future consoles to have astounding graphics. He joins the chorus of voices calling for significantly more powerful next-gen consoles, including CD Projekt artist Marek Ziemak who wants true-to-life animation.

"Face-melting graphics," said Bleszinski. "I really want our next-generation consoles to pass what I call the 'Mom Test.' So that if you were to show this console and games to your mom, she would be like, 'Wow, that clearly looks better than your last console,' and it's an essential step that needs to be taken by both Sony and Microsoft."

The idea of consoles that are constantly connected to the Internet is a somewhat controversial idea, but Bleszinski is in favor of it. "Always-connected consoles that basically require an Internet connection. So that I can just wake up in the morning and say, 'Oh a new demo has been downloaded on my hard drive, so I can check it out'," he said, adding. "As well as considering streaming gaming from the cloud, which would be very nice."

Despite the recent cancellation of the Gears of War Kinect project, Bleszinski is still intrigued by motion controls. "The other things I want to see are gesture-based controls," he said. "I think Kinect is quite cool, and I'm a big fan of using Kinect to control movies with Netflix. Maybe it will be built-in [to a future generation Xbox], maybe it won't. We'll have to see what actually comes out of that."

Wow, he almost makes an always on connection sound like it benefits consumers.
Only everything he suggested doesn't need to require an always on connection to be mandatory for everyone. Only needs to be an option for those who want the functionality.

Someone is likely to mention areas with unstable or no connection, but even with ok, albeit not spectacular connection, when I've changed provider, often rubbish policies or incompetance has left met weeks or months without internet.
Second hand prohibitions don't affect me much, but an always on connection will probably steer me towards a rival.

He needs to look at the 3DS as a good way to handle optional always on consoles.

Content is pushed to the 3DS while no games require a constant connection.

I recommend him getting a PS3 and a PSN+ subscription so he can wake up in the morning and discover the console installed a new demo for him, he will even be able to set the times the console does that *mind blown*

Streaming gaming from the cloud isn`t anything I could see with next gen outside of Japan given the infrastructure of the internet in Europe and the US. Looking at OnLive and Gaika they still have a long way to go to get a service that can deliver good quality in picture and low latency.

I`m still waiting for any core game that can deliver a good experience with Kinect or to say it better a core game that can deliver anything with Kinect besides of voice commands that can be done without Kinect and any simple microphone.

It just sounds to me that all he wants is a PC.

OnLive-style streaming for consoles isn't just impractical due to bandwidth limitations, it's also highly counter-productive. There's no point investing hundreds of millions of dollars in new gpus and cpus on a console that's just going to sit there and receive a video file.

I think the inevitable Kinect 2 will be an enormous improvement on the first. We can expect high-resolution cameras and delays comparable to normal controllers. And hopefully fewer dance games. At least proportionally.

The reality is that as graphics get better, you need a far larger proportionally increase in processing/gfx power to make the next increment have the same "impact". Even the Samaritan demo although it looks good, doesn't (IMO) present that much of an "increase of impact" to the average person.

And what this means, is that a true next-gen console would end up being *super* expensive to produce & sell at the moment. The reality is the opposite - companies are more price sensitive than ever, with a focus on making cheaper next-gen consoles (with less power) than the opposite.

If the PS4 or 720 came out at 3-4x times the current price of the 360, you really have to wonder how the market would respond (unless it really was something amazing).

Here in Australia (and this doesn't take into account inflation either!), launch prices for PS consoles were something like:
PS1 > $1000AU
PS2 > $800AU
PS3 > $600

Now the 360 can be picked up for $299, or even less. And the WiiU is likely to launch at < $400.

So in short - unless this trend reverses, the chance of getting "mind-melting" gfx on the next generation is very, very slim.

It's a bit now constant here in the UK, I believe the numbers were
PS1 £299
PS2 £299(?)
PS3 £450
The PS3 was higher, but this was attributed to the blueray, and blamed for the low early sales. £300 seems to be the magic number in the UK, the 360 launched at £279 (premium) and £219 (core). This lower price was a result of MS deciding to charge based on exchange rate rather than $400 is £400 type thinking though.
Although as you commented, you then have to take into account inflation.
