Wii U not at Gamescom this year

Nintendo to compensate with own, fan-facing PR events

Nintendo has confirmed that it won't be attending Gamescom this year, dashing hopes that the show would offer fans the opportunity to get hands-on time with the new Wii U.

A statement from Nintendo Germany explained the situation, offering some reassurance with the promise of specific Wii U lead PR events across Europe later this year.

"Although Gamescom is one of the most important fairs of the year for us, we've decided not to take part this year," said Nintendo Germany spokesperson Silja Gulicher.

"Instead we plan to broaden our post-E3 activities to introduce our retail and media partners to the Wii U and the newest titles for the Nintendo 3DS. On top of that, as part of the pan-European marketing, PR and event activities for later this year we are planning a whole array of events that will offer our fans the opportunity to try out our latest titles. We'll have more information about that soon."

Nintendo is known for eschewing a heavy presence at most trade events, usually sticking to a keynote at E3 and solid representation at the Tokyo Game Show.

Dan, I believe it is the other way around.

Well, last year they announced the Wii-U during an E3 keynote, and I'm not sure they've ever missed one...

@ Dan

Nope. They announced the Wii U during an E3 Press Conference, which all of the big 3 host every year (as well as a few other publishers like EA, Activision, and Ubisoft). They also had massive show floor space and did demonstrations and presentations throughout the show.

In contrast, Nintendo has almost never done anything in TGS. At best they do a small presentation, but generally they don't attend at all.

But they don't attend TGS with a booth or a show floor presence. Sometimes they do hold a keynote or one of the corporate heads will be a keynote speaker.

As for E3, they always have both; a big show floor presence and a major media briefing.

They usually attend Gamescom/Leipzig too. Can't recall a year they didn't attend until now.

Sorry, I was reading that at cross purposes. You're right, it wasn't a full-blown keynote, but their press conference. I guess the events around TGS are usually held before the show, too.

Apologies, I should have been clearer in my definitions.
