Rockstar's next major GTA may not launch this year after all

GTA V was unveiled late last year with a trailer that clearly got gamers excited for Rockstar's latest, and while the consensus had been that the title would ship at some point during 2012, now some are beginning to doubt that.

It's not a delay per se, since Rockstar and Take-Two never mentioned an official release date, but Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia is now reporting based on retail channel checks that GTA V may launch in the fourth fiscal quarter for Take-Two (ending in March 2013).

Take-Two's fiscal year will therefore still benefit from the blockbuster release - the company is expecting earnings per share of $2.00 for the year - but the publisher will miss out on the key holiday sales season. Then again, GTA has typically not launched in the holiday period anyway.

Bhatia outlined the keys to this release timing: "We believe releasing GTA V in F4Q instead of F3Q will provide four advantages to TTWO: 1) a less crowded window away from the big holiday releases such as Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed etc. Recall, the previous GTA title (GTA IV) was released on April 29, 2008, i.e., also away from the holiday period; 2) smoother earnings in FY14 especially if GTA V launches in the last month of FY13 (March 2013); in other words it will result in stronger GTA V catalog sales in FY14; 3) a larger installed base including the potential for launch on Nintendo Wii U; and 4) an extra couple of months to polish the game."

As much as I would love to see it happen, I very much doubt the release of GTA on Wii U unless Nintendo have been working very, VERY hard.

Patrick, have you seen the list of already confirmed titles coming to Wii U? It would be a shock NOT to come to the console.

Shouldnt be too difficult to port 360 or PS3 games to Wii U so dont see why not releasing it on the system. Its another source of sales for a limited amount of investment.

As far as I remember, there is a lot of history between Nintendo and them, mostly negative. I'm still not entirely convinced that Nintendo have really won over the hearts and minds of some big players in western gaming yet generally. It seemed like they had made a good effort in that sense with the Wii and look how that turned out!

Not sure what history you mean given Chinatown Wars was first release on the DS and only afterwards ported to the PSP and Take Two released several games for the Wii. The only thing I remember is Manhunt 2 and thats ages ago.

The Wii is a special case because current gen doesn`t translate well over to the Wii in most cases thanks to the stone age hardware thats a lot close to the PS2 and Xbox 1 then it is to the 360 or PS3. You cant just port a game over and use the same engine and assets the way they are on the 360 or PS3 and it needs a lot of extra work. Hence not many multiplatform games make it to the Wii, imagine how a Mass Effect or Batman would need to be scaled down to and changed gameplay wise to work on the Wii so the extra work is higher than what you can expect to sell for games that appeal mainly to core gamers and not to the more mainstream gamers. It`s a safe bet that a lot of core gamers that have a Wii will also have a 360 or PS3 and they would never get an AC on the Wii if they can get the much much much better version on their other system and it`s questionable how many mainstream gamers who have only a Wii would buy it.

The Wii U doesn`t have the problem so far. If the next gen consoles from MS and Sony are far far more powerful than the Wii U that might change but we won`t know that until there are facts on the consoles. Right now it would make sense to bring your 360 and PS3 games to the Wii U because it has the power to run those games and therefore shouldn`t be expensive to port over.

"Then again, GTA has typically not launched in the holiday period anyway."

GTA : October 1997
GTA 2 : September 30, 1999
GTA 3 : October 22, 2001
GTA VC : October 27, 2002
GTA SA : October 26, 2004

(Note these are the earliest release date for any platform)

So this guy is way off on that fact, and all past evidence points to october release date.

"TTWO: 1) a less crowded window away from the big holiday releases such as Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed etc. Recall, the previous GTA title (GTA IV) was released on April 29, 2008, i.e., also away from the holiday period; 2)"

GTA IV was delayed and for Take Two to be worried that games like Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed will steal sales is ridiculous. There is nothing more can I say but this guy should at least consult Wikipedia first also Take Two can release the game on January 1st and it will still sell millions on launch week, Take Two does not have to listen to anyone on GTA.

Take2 are not worried about how much it will sell day1, release date will at this stage mostly be affected by the company trying to maximise two FYs revenue.

In any cases fellas the game will be outstanding as much on a sale level as on the quality of game play, and whenever it launches it will outsell and overshadow any other blockbusters that lurks around the corner.
