PlayStation exclusive a "leading franchise" says SCEE

PlayStation 3 exclusive Uncharted: Drake's Deception shipped an impressive 3.8 million units worldwide on release day.

"Uncharted 3 is a blockbuster and these incredible sales figures reflect that. Consumers are clearly as eager to play the game as critics were to heap praise upon it," said SCEE's head of communications Nick Caplin.

"The team at Naughty Dog deserve this fantastic reception at retail. The Uncharted series, exclusive to PlayStation 3, has redefined the third-person adventure genre and is now one of the leading franchises available."

Yesterday Activision announced that Modern Warfare 3 was its biggest game launch ever, but did not release actual sales figures. Analysts Sterne Agee recently predicted 5.5 to 6 million day one sales for the title.

Unless it's reported by NPD, Chart Track/ GfK, Media Create or Famitsu, it's a shipped in figure.

Yes, I was looking at Gamasutra - Sony has confirmed with them that it is SHIPPED, not sold.

Well, someone is lying as IGN has confirmed Sony said it's SOLD: http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/121/12121...

David, to Sony, selling to retailers and distributors IS sold.

We still to this day have a major problem grasping who the customer is for these companies. Sony, Nintendo and MS do not sell to the consumer, they sell to retail who in turn sell to consumers. For all the major gaming companies, shipped = sold to them because it is a sale. Just not a sale to us, yet.

Day 1 sales are nothing more than the total units ordered by retail from the publisher.

I would be interested to know how many copies sold to consumers - it's a brilliant game, and although it took a while to really strike a cord with me, I think Naughty Dog definitely took the right decision in making it a bit slower-paced and more thoughtful than Among Thieves was. Hopefully it will sell at least as many copies as its predecessor.

Terence, getting actual consumer sell through data will always be an extrapolation from polled retailers. NPD probably does that internally and VGChartz is known for doing it. Famitsu and Media Create do it in Japan. But again, it's all an extrapolation from store polling.
