Sonic Generations sets franchise pre-order record

Sega begins marketing push to commemorate series' 20th anniversary

Sonic Generations, the latest game in Sega's flagship franchise, has set a new pre-order record.

The Sonic franchise is now in its 20th year, and Sega is describing Sonic Generations as the "most anticipated" game in its history.

"This year is a milestone for Sonic and we want to make sure this is the best title that Sonic fans, old and new, have been waiting for," said Alan Pritchard, Sega of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing.

Sega is also organising a series of events to commemorate Sonic's anniversary, including a partnership with Six Flags theme parks, a "custom playground" in East Oakland's UpRising community centre, a pro-skating tournament, and a Sonic balloon for New York's Macy's Day Parade.

Sega has seen its software sales tumble in recent times. In October, the company lowered its revenue forecast for the half year ending March 2012.
