Irrational Games creative director explains role on next year's BioShock Infinite

Ken Levine, studio head at Irrational Games, has explained his role on new title BioShock Infinite, making it clear he maintains a hands-on approach.

"This is my game," Levine told Joystiq.

"I love the fact that we sit down and chat with each other, but at the end of the day ... this thing's gotta be my decision."

He explained his role was as both editor and writer of a magazine, and disliked the fashionable auteur label.

"I believe more in editorship. Auteur sounds like you do everything,"

Levine, who co-founded Irrational Games, also spoke about the BioShock film that is currently in production, revealing that had offered advice to the filmmakers about staying true to the franchise.

"Unless for some reason I decided I'm gonna go be a screenwriter or something, but then that's a particular job and I have a different responsibility there, which is writing a script instead of the guy who protects the franchise and makes sure the film is true to the franchise."

I hope Ken manages to keep the movie true to the franchise. The world of Rapture is well-thought out and very alive thanks to the interaction and story telling in the first two games. To be honest I didnt even know they were making a movie, but it would be easy for Hollywood to dissapoint - again.

Um, an author ("auteur" in French) is a creator with authority. (Hence the use of the name author.) An editor isn't.

Thank you, a voice of reason from time to time is a good thing.

When has any movie based on a video game done well? The bar is low, so I suspect that BioShock stands a good chance (perhaps better than others) of being the best yet.

Good to see a film being made about a game universe that was created by a guy (Levine) who came from a screenwriting background, and has created a world with interest and depth.

I mean, making a game of DOOM? What hope was there ever that that could be great. Very little.

But BioShock? Much more opportunity for greatness there!

There's an interesting interview with Levine about some of his experiences as a screenwriting many many years ago, and working on Thief (my favorite game). :) ...

The whole podcast series is a real blast if you're a Looking Glass Studios fan, and I must say they're one of my all time favorite studios. I hope they get a chance to talk to more of the crew one day, like Doug Church and Warren Spector, etc. The main page of interviews is here...
