Rockstar formally announces GTA V

Tue 25 Oct 2011 11:11am GMT / 7:11am EDT / 4:11am PDT

Teaser site promises trailer for November 2

Rockstar's website has been replaced by a splash screen formally announcing Grand Theft Auto V, promising a trailer on November 2 but offering no further details.

Speculation over the title has been rife, almost since the launch of the previous game, with commenters taking guesses on location, timeframe and characters.

No platforms have been posted for the title as of yet, nor has any window for a release date, meaning that the game could well slip to the next generation of home consoles.

Grand Theft Auto IV shipped huge numbers, breaking the then record for day one sales in the UK.

This is fantastic news!
We all knew it was coming, but glad to hear it officially. GTA4 is currently my favourite game ever... so hopeful for 5.

Hmmmm, I'd guess you won't see it until Aug/Sep next year. Given it leaves only 6 months until release, and would hit shelves during an already busy spring schedule.

Y'know, I never did play GTAIV...

Excellent. I hope some of those I WANZT TEH GTA V NOW crowd I see griping all over message boards about them not getting the game when they want it also buys Max Payne 3, as Rockstar is working pretty damn hard on that game and it shows.

Rampant speculation!

V with scroll = looks a bit like the typeface and style off a US banknote = New York? Wall Street? Something to do with capitalism? All of the above. :D

Massive fan of the series, still play each and every one every year or so to 100% completions.
I hope they make V more arcadey driving and get rid of the movement momentum, these were the faults of IV imo and why Saints Row 2 was better received. Players just want to take off in a car and rip around the city being chased and shooting, and not get thrown out the front windscreen with the merest nudge.

And if there are any Rockstar peeps reading this, convert Liberty City and Vice City Stories for the PC and give it as an extra for V (or even just as Steam exclusives, more money!) Make me a very happy chappy.

Rampant Speculation Part 2:

Female Lead Character

The logo looks more like the clan emblems you'd find in San Andreas, so that's a good sign.

IV was a good tech demo, but it could hardly be classified as a full game. It just felt empty, especially compared to San Andreas. I hope they make the world bigger with more non-urban open spaces, and a lot more to do.

One more thing, I want to run over people... while... riding... a... HORSE!

I liked the more grounded, realistic direction they went with GTA IV, but as the guy above me said, there just needs to be a little bit more to do.

And... less swerving car handling.

May 2012 release date. Max Payne is out in March opposite every other publishers end of FY titles, but Take2 don't need to do this as their FY ends in Sept. The only explanation is they are making room for another title, and Rockstar traditionally release in that slot. With Bioshock coming out in September, Take2 are going to have one hell of second half of FY12.

lets hope they didn't compromise variety and map size for graphical improvements. That would make me sad. Also bring back the San Andreas map with 3 different varied cities with 3 varied outer rim environments with all the fun of planes and jets and jet packs and now I want to play San Andreas again. Hopefully the wacky and fun story from the pre GTA4 is there, gritty was boring.

October 2012. I would be my life on it.

Why? Well firstly, Max Payne 3 comes out in March, so they won't want to release anything until at least July to give it a fighting chance. And also:

GTA - October 1997 (first release, on PC)
GTA 2 - October 25, 1999
GTA 3 - October 22, 2011
GTA: Vice City - October 29, 2002
GTA: San Andreas - October 28, 2004
GTA IV - April 19, 2008
GTA IV: Ballad of Gay Tony - October 29, 2009
GTA: Chinatown Wars - October 20, 2009

So what about GTA IV you say? It was released in April? It certainly was, but that's because it was delayed.
From October 16, 2007.

I hope they take out some of the grittiness from IV and replace it with the fun from Vice City. GTA IV was one of my most disappointing purchases ever. The whole story was bleak, grey, and depressing and, the plate spinning exercise that was keeping friends happy was a total pain.

@Christopher: Eh? Surely your lonely fat cousin ringing you every night wanting to be taken out to dinner was one of the main selling points? :D
