Former vice president of business and legal affairs Clinton Foy promoted to new role

Square Enix Inc. has promoted Clinton Foy to the position of COO.

Foy held the position of vice president of business and legal affairs at Square Enix for the last six years. He also served as general counsel.

His new responsibilities will include leading the company's business development initiatives and online group, as well as watching over the business and legal affairs department.

"One of the key new responsibilities of the COO role will be to shape and drive more aggressive business development initiatives in free-to-play, social, mobile, browser, and emerging platforms," said Square Enix president and CEO Mike Fischer.

"Clinton's valuable experience makes him uniquely qualified to lead our organisation in these important areas."

Before joining Square Enix, Foy worked as an attorney with Heller Ehrman, where he represented high-profile clients like Microsoft, Yahoo and Sony.

Foy takes on his new role in a period of decline for Square Enix. The company reported a loss of $140 million last financial year, and both revenues and profits were down in the last quarter.

I missed the news that Square Enix was in the red. As one of the few remaining big-budget storytellers, I would hate to see them fall, I very much hope this guy contributes to future stability for the company.

I just hope that Square can go back to making good games like they did during the SNES and PlayStation era.

The ones that focused on good storytelling and not so much on the graphical power.

Because with the cost of making games being so expensive, you need to put what is important to you first.

And I know with the extra cost of graphics, I feel that Square should focus more on making good stories in their games and a bit less on graphical power that tries to make their characters almost life like that might make them bankruped in the future.

That Final Fantasy Spirits Within movie how much that almost costed Squaresoft is one key example of what I am trying to talk about. Great Graphics but poor sales almost cost the gaming industry one of the most special developers ever to come from Japan. :(

@Tony: It's doubtful whether Foy's business background is going to contribute much to the storytelling department, but maybe they will actually adopt a F2P mmo and more on paying writers rather than the art department the big bucks. Sakaguchi was definitely a great leader (albeit a bit too visionary for his own good) when he spearheaded the company, but it seems technology has gotten the better of him.
