800 indie devs using GameSpy online services

Halfbrick, Trapdoor and Warm Drum Studios among devs signed up to GameSpy Open initiative

More than 800 independent developers have signed up for GameSpy's complimentary online tools and services.

The GameSpy Open initiative was launched in February, making the same networking and tracking technologies used in games like Crysis 2, Red Dead Redemption and Bulletstorm available for no initial fee.

"GameSpy Technology 's goal is to make it easy to integrate online connectivity to games," said GameSpy Technology's vice president Todd Northcutt in a statement.

"We're proud to see GameSpy Technology's tools embraced by so many teams. Developers who recognize the power of online features can now make their awesome games with less technical challenges between their vision and their execution."

Gamespy revealed that Fruit Ninja developer Halfbrick, Real Deal developer War Drum Studios and G.I. Joyride developer Trapdoor are among the studios currently using its services.

"GameSpy gave us exactly what we needed to bring cross-platform matchmaking to Fruit Ninja, and the tools were easy to integrate into our existing code base," said Halfbrick CEO Shainiel Deo.

"Now that matchmaking is rolling out, we're looking forward to exploring several other ideas that GameSpy can help us achieve on global multi-platform scale."
