PSN Pass confirmed by Sony

Sony follows EA and THQ in protecting online content

After news yesterday that German Resistance 3 bundles listed a PSN Pass on the packaging, Sony has today confirmed that it's introducing a new system of registration codes for a selection of PS3 titles.

"We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities," SCEE told VG247.

"This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title. This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio."

Sony had already introduced a similar set up for PSP titles like Modnation Racers, and EA and THQ already use registration codes to protect online content.

Last year, while still in his role as president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Andrew House told GI that Sony were looking at introducing such a system.

"On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we’re broadly supportive of that. And we’re exploring actively the same option for our own content."
