Subscriptions still possible, as Funcom prepares for summer movie tie-in

Massively multiplayer online developer Funcom has announced that it is to offer a free-to-play option for Age of Conan, in parallel to a traditional subscription package.

The new option will be introduced this summer, as the game attempts to take advantage of the forthcoming new Hollywood movie and undergoes a name change to Age of Conan: Unrated.

"The time is right for Age of Conan now as we recognised the opportunity presented by the increased profile of the license, with the new Conan movie coming out this fall," said executive producer Craig Morrison in an interview with sister site Eurogamer.

The "freemium" option will work similarly to most Asian online models, with basic play being free but users having to pay for extra items and expansions.

"This is done by allowing free players [access] to most of the original content, and having the expanded content as premium content," said Morrison. "So free players will have access to all the original levelling quests and outdoor playfields that take them all the way to level 80."

Although the game will introduce content specifically related to the movie there is no expansion directly related to it.

In a separate interview Morrison explained that, "We wanted to do something for the movie. But we also knew that we couldn't do all the improvements that we wanted alongside a fully-fledged expansion pack on the side."

"We'd have to shut down everything else and only focus on that. And we really didn't want to do that," he said. "We wanted to provide content to tie into the movie and be able to do the constant updates and the tweaks and the fixes the players want."

Great move! The game has improved leaps and bounds since its initial release, and is great fun to play. Hopefully this should pull in new players and bring back some of the old ones.

cant say much about the new Movie.

The original Conan movie is a classic. Beautifully filmed, great musical composition by Basil, suitable acting by Arnie as that timeless cro magon fighter. The new actor replacing arnie....it just feel all sorts of wrong. There is no feeling of what makes Conan ...conan.

Finally, its been on the radar for some time and is exactly what AOC needs its a good game that has come on leaps and bounds since THAT release but is dealthy lacking in population so much so it feels like a solo game till 80.

Jason Momoa for Conan is perfect IMO if you have read the Conan books he wasnt this musclebound beefcake portrayed by Arnie and post Conan Movie comics yes he was a large athletic man but had a very aggresive almost wild fighting style, I advise you watch Momoa in Game of Thrones as Khal Drogo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKKKheGHOKc or more so in Stargate Atlantis as Ronon Dex http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GY_cRCcW3yQ and you may just change your mind as too how awesome a Conan he is going to make.

Even if it is slightly off topic, the first Conan was great, because for 20 minutes it had almost no words, great music and great scenery. Compare that to the average 20 minutes of exposition featuring shoddy dialog you get today and you know what sold you on this movie. It did constantly shout out what was happening on screen anyway.

The original Conan was a classic low fantasy movie, and it's because of great cinematography, score and pacing as Chee and Klaus said. As with many movies, it'll come down to the script - personally, I thought the original had several great dialog moments (voice over by the Wizard, Doom talking about power, Conan's "prayer" to Crom).

Doing great action sequences is comparatively easy to making a movie that's memorable on the whole.

Great action CGI can be quite detracting. Look at POTC4....
on the other hand, stuck without a massive budget, good cinematography, pacing and the right dialog was what worked for the King's speech.

Whenever there is a artistic direction or problem in game production - I often point out, lets look at how they did it in Conan the barbarian.

The original Conan, had alot of greats working on it. Because of the low budget, it was done on location and special effects was utterly minimalist. In fact, it was the first example of special effects in the industry. Viewing it today, tomorrow, it has not dated whatsoever.

The first 30 minutes, from the forging of the blade, the harshness of the land, the last Atlantean in Thulas Doom and the WHeel of pain are iconic. I seriously doubt if a remake can achieve all of these, and short of handing over the film to the likes of experienced reboot directors eg. JJ abrams, all the cgi in the world is just ....a wasted of money.

Nevertheless, I'll reserve judgement till the film comes out, although judging by the trailer..... I'd feel like finding a dark cave to hide in for what is best in life?

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

Free to play models can kill the flow of the original game. It is a good move to get people interested, but I feel that some returning players will feel slighted. LOTRO's free play is a joke when you look under the hood. Having to use Turbine Points to do the side quests makes it really hard to level without grinding. A further knife in the back is that TP's can be earned by completing the deeds(generally kill X monsters or discover locations), but it isn't retroactive. My level 40ish main has no TP's from all the deeds he completed so I have nothing to really do unless I drop down some real cash. It also attracts gold farmers and disruptive players.

For Funcom's original MMO: Anarchy Online, introducing the Free-to-play model breathed new life into the game, and extended it's lifespan well beyond it's then dying user-base. It also game them an influx of new revenue which they used to build even more expansions to the game.

Existing players will complain at first, because complaining is what players do best. But in the end, everyone ends out better for it. More players in the game means more trading. And most paid players will also be able to enjoy the free accounts to dual-log. I count this as a win for Conan.
