Gap widens between Microsoft's console and the PlayStation 3 and Wii

Sales of Xbox 360 in the UK doubled last week off the back of the launch of Kinect.

The spike was confirmed to sister site Eurogamer this afternoon by sales monitor Chart-Track, with a spokesperson stating that, while specific figures could not be revealed, it was "more than a fair reflection" to say the figure was double that of the previous week.

The boost is understood to have widened substantially the gap between Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Sony's biggest hope for a pre-Christmas surge coming next week with the release of the long-delayed Gran Turismo 5.

A senior publishing source added: "360 doubled last week and it was already selling a lot. Wii and PS3 have been beaten by 360 consistently over the past few months.

"Wii is still outselling PS3 – the numbers are going the wrong way for Nintendo year-on-year but it's certainly not a disaster."

Kinect went on sale last week both separately and as part of official hardware bundles, the latter likely to be responsible for the jump in numbers.

Microsoft revealed yesterday that over one million units of Kinect has sold worldwide in the ten days following its 4th November US launch.

The US giant reckons it's on track to sell five million units by Christmas.

Well I think in an article here it said that the 360 accounts for 56% of the sales with the other platforms together 44% and that genre is 360 territory and with the 360 being cheaper you would go with that one for a multiplatform title if you are on the fence between them. Some multiplatform games can give one console a bigger boost than another console.

Anyway the thing is without knowing how many bundles with console and kinect where sold as well as how many new 360 users bought kinect it`s hard to determine how much impact the kinect launch had. For all we know people with the old 360 traded that one in for a slim and kinect (just an example not that it is necessarily that way). Sure kinect had some role in the sales spike, but it`s hard to say how much is actually due to kinect and I expect it to be more a combination of several things instead of just the kinect launch.

Also unfortunately there are no hard numbers so it could be the sales increased from 10k to 20k or from 100k to 200k. As example the PSPgo doubled the sales in Japan few weeks ago so you could say "great job well done" if you dont know that the previous week it sold 900 units and had than 1800 units sold. I would really like to see hard numbers, but NPD does not give them away anymore and Chart Track does not give them away either to really see what are the actual numbers to determine if the double amount is actually a lot or not.

Well, Werner, I think it's kind of pointing us in the right direction:
"360 doubled last week and it was already selling a lot. Wii and PS3 have been beaten by 360 consistently over the past few months."

And there is the thing without hard numbers, because that statement does not seem to come from Chart Track and without hard numbers Sony, MS or Nintendo can always say it`s selling a lot and of course a lot means a different amount for different people.

I`m the kind of person who is more interested in actual numbers instead of just saying "we are selling a lot", "we are outselling the competition by a high margin" and so on, I always take those things with a grain of salt. They are not lies, but it`s vague and does not give an accurate picture. So I`m the person who is expecting Nintendo to send out on the 3DS launch day a press release saying something like "3DS is the fastest selling 3D handheld in the history of gaming". :D

Sales would have tripled if there had been 100% supply of product at launch. Just a hunch :)

Not sure about that here in Dublin neither HMV, Game or Gamestop seems to be out of stock of Kinect. Game uk is out of stock for Kinect, but not for the 360+Kinect bundle. So if the cheapest solution is still available how would sales for the console triple if the standalone Kinect would be in stock?

Good Question Werner, one for which i do not have an answer personally. Consumers are a funny bunch.
