PlayStation phone rumours return

Sony refuses to comment on Android-powered PS smartphone chatter

Rumours of a PlayStation branded phone have resurfaced, with the latest chatter suggesting Sony Ericsson is working on a smartphone powered by Android.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe unsurprisingly told GamesIndustry.biz this morning that it would not "comment on rumour and speculation" on Engadget's report that the device could launch as soon as October.

According to the site's sources, the handset would be based on Android 3.0 and feature a 3.7" to 4.1" screen, sliding hardware with PSP-style controls under the screen, a "long touch pad" for analog input and a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU.

The report also claimed a new area of Android Market would be created for games on the system, and that PSP and original PlayStation games have been demoed on the handset, with versions of God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and LittleBigPlanet a possibility.

Rumours of a collaboration between Sony's PlayStation team and Sony Ericsson have been numerous, with the most recent suggesting a team was in place to work on a hybrid device.

Sony Ericsson's Aino was the first handset to be PlayStation 3 compatible, allowing users to access PS3 content via WiFi.
