Apple has revealed that its anticipated Game Center multiplayer and social networking features will not be supported by the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod Touches.

Game Center is to be IOS devices' equivalent to Xbox Live, offering a friends system, achievements and leaderboards.

OpenFeint had achieved some traction with something similar in a number of iPhone games, but Game Center will be built into the upcoming 4.1 version of the firmware and thus available cross-game.

The release of a developer beta of said firmware has uncovered the new restriction (as reported by Endagadget) – meaning that multiplayer features will be denied to owners of the two-year-old Apple devices.

Game Center will, however, be available on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, the third-generation Touch, and the iPad.
